INFO:
A week ago we spent the cold day castrating our home raised bull calves. Castration is the removal of male testicles creating what we call a steer. The cattle industry castrates their bull calves for a variety of reasons. First, castrating bull calves provides a safer environment for the farmers to work in because it decreases the aggressiveness of the animal as it gets older. Second, castration controls reproduction. We house male and female animals together in our growing pens so we do not want our animals to mate if we are raising them for beef. Finally, by removing the male reproductive organ we are able to raise a better quality beef product. If you have any questions about castration, we will do a more in depth blog post on the discussion. 😁😁
